In addition to this, each site has been trained in the National Incident Management System for responding to an emergency. Each site typically participates in 10 emergency drills every school year. We commonly have the additional assistance of law enforcement and fire services during many of these drills, and the support they've given us is appreciated.

What Families Should Know During Emergencies
Your child's safety is our top priority. To ensure we’re all prepared, here is what you should know about school emergency response. We appreciate you taking the time to learn this information; your collaboration is critical during emergencies.

Emergency Terms Explained
Here are some terms you may receive in emergency communications from your school or the district.

  • Evacuation: This means a rapid relocation to a safer location.
  • Closure: This indicates a temporary school shutdown due to safety concerns.
  • Shelter: This means seeking protection within the school building. Learning may continue depending on the situation. This is applicable when there is no immediate threat to the building’s structure, and everyone can remain safe by staying indoors. An example scenario is a wild animal on campus.
  • Secure: This involves increased security and awareness due to a potential escalated risk. Learning may continue depending on the situation. This is applicable when attempting to evacuate would expose individuals to more danger than staying in place. It could involve securing classrooms, exterior doors, and the physical infrastructure. This scenario could be used if releasing students and staff may impede law enforcement or firefighting activities in the vicinity.
  • ALICE Procedure: This procedure is implemented in situations of immediate danger with severe consequences. ALICE Training is a district-wide initiative that equips staff and students with proactive strategies and options for responding effectively to potential violent threats in age-appropriate manners.

What Parents Should Do During an Emergency
Different emergencies require different responses. Please know that the directions we provide families will always prioritize your child’s safety and best interests. We will follow the guidance of local law enforcement and emergency agencies to determine when it’s safe for families to come to the school or when a reunification location is necessary.

What Parents Should Do

  • Stay Calm and Informed: Check for updates via text, email, phone calls, and TTUSD.org.
  • Trust the Training: Students and staff regularly practice emergency procedures.
  • Reunification: Meet your child at the designated location (announced via district communications) with a photo ID. Whoever picks up your child must be listed as an emergency contact in Aeries (our student information system).
  • Monitor Local Agencies: Stay informed through local law enforcement and emergency agency updates.

What Parents Should NOT Do

  • Don't Call the School: Phone lines must stay open for emergency communications.
  • Don't Come to the School: All access points must be clear to allow immediate access for emergency vehicles.

Additional Reminders

  • We understand you'll be worried. We will follow law enforcement's directions and share updates as soon as possible.
  • Reunification locations and procedures will be clearly communicated.
  • Your child's safety is our top priority.

As a district, we will continue to evolve and refine our safety protocols to be in line with the most up-to-date best practices.

Update Your Child's Emergency Card
Ensuring the accuracy of your student's emergency card is crucial. Please check your student's Aeries account to verify that it contains the correct information. In case of an emergency, your child will only be released to contacts listed on the Emergency Card. Feel free to contact your school site if you need assistance with this process.
